5 Cosmetic Treatments Your Dentist May Provide

Cosmetic dentistry is an area of dentistry that focuses on improving the smile’s appearance. This improvement is accomplished by addressing imperfections in the smile through various procedures. The gums and teeth are the most common targets of cosmetic treatments. In most cases, these treatments are strictly elective and not medically necessary. However, these treatments are sometimes involved in medically necessary treatments as well.

5 Cosmetic Treatments Your Dentist May Provide

  • Inlays and Onlays – Also referred to as indirect fillings, inlays and onlays are often made in a dental laboratory. These are used to repair teeth that don’t have enough structure to support a filling. They are also used when mild or moderate decay is present while the tooth cusps remain undamaged. If the cusps are damaged, an onlay will be used instead, which covers the tooth’s whole surface.
  • Composite Bonding – When teeth have become discolored, decayed, or damaged, your dentist may suggest composite bonding. This treatment begins with the decay being drilled out of the tooth. The area is then prepared for the placement of composite material. Once the area is prepared, layer after layer of composite will be put in place and cured, one after the other. As this proceeds, your dentist will sculpt the tooth until it resembles nearby teeth.
  • Dental Veneers – This form of restoration is most often created from ceramic graded for medical use. Veneers are special caps custom-fitted to your teeth to create a beautiful and realistic smile. Your dentist can use them to address damaged enamel, cracked or crooked teeth, and those that are heavily stained. Your dentist will apply the veneer to the front of your teeth with a special adhesive.
  • Teeth Whitening – A relatively simple procedure available in-office or over-the-counter, dental whitening is a popular option. It’s quick and easy to perform, taking only a single visit to the clinic to see results. In some cases, an additional visit may be necessary if extensive dental cleaning is needed to prepare for this procedure. Once clean, a dental bleaching agent is applied that will help to lighten the shade of the teeth.
  • Implants – Dental implants are the order of the day for those who are missing teeth. Thanks to the titanium posts on which implants are placed, they provide many benefits. These posts encourage the growth of new bone in the jaw and undergoing osseointegration. Osseointegration is when the titanium posts become permanently integrated with the patient’s jawbone. Your dentist can perfectly match the crown placed on the implant to the patient’s remaining teeth. Any number of teeth, including both full arches, can be replaced through implants.
